创作背景
1984年，英国歌手菲尔·科林斯和鲍勃·格尔多夫召集了十余位歌手录制了歌曲《Do they know its Christmas》，为非洲饥民筹集了许多善款[4]。
英国歌坛的此项义举打动了美国歌手哈里·贝拉方特，他认为美国人也不能落后，这一想法得到了许多人的支持。当时，埃塞俄比亚和苏丹的食物短缺、人民挨饿的消息同时也震惊了迈克尔· 杰克逊和莱昂内尔·里奇，两人认为自己该做点什么。于是他们合写了这首歌曲。两人费了四天的时间写作曲，里奇先完成一部分，杰克逊看到后灵感大发，一夜之间就把全曲写好。之后杰克逊又花了两个半小时作词[3-4]。
1985年1月28日，全美音乐奖颁奖典礼结束后，迈克尔杰克逊号召45位歌手来到位于洛杉矶的A&M录音室，花了一晚上时间录制出了《We Are The World》[4]。
