他是青春期的少年代表，从他的经历里可以清楚的看到与家长的代沟，家长总希望他像哥哥一样可以成为出人头地的人，可是他的理想也只是做一个麦田里的守望者，站在悬崖上，捉住不断奔跑的孩子。大人总认为霍尔顿是一个败家子，是一个不良少年。但他有自己的思想，在他那半成熟的心中还存留着点点梦想，即使它在那污浊的世道变得那样的细微渺小。
霍尔顿是明智的，是聪明的，他看透了社会的本质。他的朴素和善良，是他所在的年代很少的，虽然他的有些思想还比较幼稚，虽然他有许许多多的缺点，但他反抗现实、向往美好世界的纯洁的一面是不可忽视的。
