而答尔丢夫的为人并不是像奥尔恭等人所想的那样善良美好，他是一名实实在在的伪君子。他表面上是一名虔诚的信徒，为了奥尔恭愿意做很多事，也为了穷人散发钱财，他在奥尔恭等人面前隐藏了他丑陋的内心。他所做的一切只是为了骗取奥尔恭的信任，然后得到奥尔恭的财产。很显然，他的计谋刚开始很成功，奥尔恭等人被他骗了，财产也被他得到了。可是天网恢恢，最终他的阴谋被识破了。在现在的社会上骗人的手段和方式多样，答尔丢夫骗人的方式并不高明，但是在当时的社会中，让大家看到了信徒的虚伪，也表明了莫里哀对教会的不满。
答尔丢夫的真实面貌除了奥尔恭和柏奈尔夫人外的其他人识破了，可是在奥尔恭面前，玛莉亚娜等人就算怎么说也没法使奥尔恭相信，最后还是奥尔恭的妻子欧米尔设计让奥尔恭看清楚了答尔丢夫。莫里哀以这个故事，揭露了天主教信徒的伪善和欺骗手段，同时嘲讽了上当受骗者的糊涂昏庸。莫里哀对伪君子的形象塑造十分用心，把伪君子的心理和行为都细致地表现出来了。
另外在故事中的仆人桃丽娜的形象也十分突出，她不是一个普通的仆人形象。桃丽娜敢于在奥尔恭面前，直言不讳地指出了答尔丢夫伪善的一面。本来作为一名仆人，不应该在主人讲话时插嘴，更不能反驳主人，但是莫里哀塑造了这么一个大胆的仆人，让故事增添了光彩。
