  再者,作者的`这种安排实则上隐含了一种“知错能改,善莫大焉”的意味。我们都知道,《地狱》是一个人过大于功的象征,而《净界》则是一个无功无过的象征,到了《天堂》,就是功大于过的意思了。作者本人从《地狱》升到《净界》再升到《天堂》,完成了一个从过到功,从罪到德的过程。而相同的,普通市民,甚者是整个国家,如若能有所顿悟,这种上升也是在神的神恩之内的。所以《神曲》看似批判佛罗伦萨,实则在内部也隐含了作者对佛罗伦萨的无限热忱和希望。

  然则,《神曲》的创造并不仅仅是为了影射某些宗教人生的问题,它更深层次的原因是为挽救沉沦中的佛罗伦萨。作者在书中的不同部分对此都有隐喻。比如在《地狱》这折里,作者精心挑选的灵魂代言人很大成分上都是来自佛罗伦萨,从教职人员到普通的骄、贪、色等人员都给予了不同的惩罚。作者通过众多灵魂的嘴道出了当世的佛罗伦萨的黑暗,也通过地狱中的魔鬼给出了评判。而在《净界》和《天堂》里,作者则通过对佛罗伦萨的评判上升到一个整体的层面,通过神人之口委婉道出。这其中包含着作者对自我成长、生活的土地的深厚情感。读之,大有“怒其不争”的意味。

  以上是从大的方面对《神曲》大意的一点自我见解。而从小的方面看,《神曲》诚然是一曲中世纪拙朴的史诗。在《神曲》里,随处可见古希腊神话和《荷马史诗》的影响。英雄主义、正义,神学的光芒照耀着整部《神曲》,犹如但丁在天堂中看到的天使的光芒,《神曲》本身也散发着耀眼的金光。然而,《神曲》的金光却并不全为歌颂金光而写,而是为了歌颂世俗伟大的道德和信仰而作,这正是《神曲》对古希腊神话的借鉴和突破之处。

  然而,由于《神曲》大量地运用古希腊神话的典故,因而初读给人一种晦涩难懂的感觉,对读者的西方文学功底有较大的要求。

  一部伟大的诗篇,语言是其重要的表现手法。《神曲》的语言一承西方文学的理性辩论的风格,而与我们熟悉的中国诗歌的语言截然不同。
